The Attributes of God

2

Foundations of Faith – The Attributes of God

To know God is the highest pursuit in life.  One very powerful way of doing this is by;

  • Discovering the attributes of God
  • And with all your heart, just simply believe and trust in them

God’s attributes wonderfully show you how immeasurably God is involved in your life and how immensely He desires to spend eternity with you!

Also, as faith in God’s attributes help increase your awe of Him, you will find no greater power in this lifetime that will give you such peace, confidence and strength. Your foundation will become unshakable!

Truly knowing and trusting God for all that He is to you is a constant plea from the heart of your Creator that you will find throughout the entire Bible.  He wants your search of knowing Him to be sincere and intense.  We should never expect any benefit coming from a superficial or half-hearted attitude when approaching this subject.

  • (Please read Psalm 63:1)

The following verses show us some of the blessings for sincerely seeking God that we cannot afford to be without;

  • (Psalm 34:10)
  • (Psalm 119:2)
  • (Hebrews 11:6)
  • (Proverbs 28:5)

It is absolutely impossible to know everything about God, but God has allowed enough of Himself to be revealed to us so that we will completely understand that He, and He alone, deserves all our love, trust, praise and worship. We come to understand that we are to have the utmost respect and obedience towards Him.

Through the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible, the Holy Spirit and creation, God has allowed us to embark on an amazing journey of getting to know Him more intimately and deeply by His attributes being revealed to us through them. This is what this study is all about.  Even though we can easily write a 1000-page book on each attribute, our desire is to just simply show you the attribute and a couple of verses in God’s Word that pertains to them.   The wonder, power and beauty that will come from it is when you take the time in a quiet moment of your day, look at one or two of them, and open up your faith to the reality of this is what and who God really is to you every breath and heartbeat along the way.

So, let’s begin this wonderful journey and may God help us to see Him more clearly, trust Him more completely, and fall in love with Him more deeply!

With the theme “Foundations of Faith” in mind, we picked out a few attributes to talk about with these questions to consider;

  • Will this come under attack?
  • Why is it important?
  • Why might this be confusing?

God is One, but He exists as three Persons – God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit

(1 John 5:7), “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.”

(Matthew 3:16-17), “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

(Matthew 28:19), “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

This attribute of God has come under attack by various religions like the Watch Tower Society commonly known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Mormons, and others.  They refuse to believe that Jesus is God.  And yet, that is exactly who God’s Word claims Him to be;

(John 1:1-14), “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

(Isaiah 9:6), “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty GodEverlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

(John 20:26-28), “And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him (Jesus), My Lord and my God.”

The reason why this is so important to understand and believe, is shown in the following words of our Lord Jesus Himself;

(John 8:23-58), “And He said to them, ‘You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’ Then they said to Him, ‘Who are You?’…Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’

In our next lesson, we are going to study this more deeply.

Creator – The whole of creation came into existence through the will and power of God.

(Colossians 1:16), “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

(John 1:1-3), “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

This attribute of God has been under great attack within our public-school systems and universities, governments, along with our worldwide media of television and internet.  It is truly shocking to see such a great denial of the existence of an almighty God with such powerful proof as described in the following words;

(Psalm 19:1-4), “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world… “

In light of all the many different stars, moons, planets and complexed designs of animals, insects, vegetation and even the wonder of the creation of the human body, anyone with even a small amount of reasoning can only conclude with the following thought;

  • “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God…” (Psalm 14:1)

Let’s now look at the next three attributes and tie them in a relevant way.

Omniscience of God – God has all knowledge.

(Psalm 147:4-5), “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.”

(Matthew 6:8), “…your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”

(Matthew 10:29-30), “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

Omnipresence of God – God is present everywhere at all times.

(Proverbs 15:3), “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

(Psalm 139:7-10), “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.”

Omnipotence of God – God can do all things that are consistent with His character. God is all powerful.

(Job 26:7-14), “He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it. He covers the face of His throne, And spreads His cloud over it. He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness. The pillars of heaven tremble, And are astonished at His rebuke. He stirs up the sea with His power, And by His understanding He breaks up the storm. By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?”

(Daniel 4:34-35), “And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, “What have You done?”

When you are traveling through a difficult moment in life, it is during these times when these previous three attributes of God become very real.  You just have to believe and trust in them.

  • God knows what you are going through
  • His presence is with you
  • He will accomplish by His power what His will is for you

Holiness of God – God is set apart from His creation.

(Isaiah 6:1-5), “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”

(Revelation 4:8), “The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

God is the standard of what holiness actually is.  We do not dare to come to our own definition of what we would consider holiness is.  Anything that is less than the holiness of God, is not holiness at all.  God calls us to His standard of holiness.

(1 Peter 1:15-16), “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Wrath of God – God’s holiness and moral Character lead Him to judgment and punishment of unrighteousness.

(Revelation 19:11), “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.”

(Revelation 20:11-15), “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”

(Matthew 23:27-33), “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness… Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?”

God is Truth – Absolute truth has its foundation in God Himself, because God is truth.

(John 14:6), “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

(John 15:26), “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”

(John 17:17), “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”

Truth is not “relative” or different for each person.  Some will tell you that what ever you feel is right to you, that is what is right. God’s response to such thinking is found in the following words;

(Proverbs 16:25), “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

Truth is “absolute” and it is God Himself.  He reveals this truth through Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Goodness of God – There is such an absolute perfection in God’s nature and being that nothing is wanting to it or defective in it, and nothing can be added to it to make it better.

(Galatians 5:22-23), “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

(Psalm 31:19), “Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You In the presence of the sons of men!”

Sometimes when the goodness of God is applied to our lives, we do not see it as “goodness”.  In those moments we must always remember that one of God’s attributes does not work independently to the exclusion of the other attributes.  They all exist and act together at the same time.

God is Love – No matter how we try to explain this, we are going to fall way short.  JUST TRUST GOD’S WORD & BELIEVE IT!!!

(1 John 4:8-16), “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins… And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”

And God’s love for you is a love that can be no greater! So please, just praise Him for it and forever be thankful and never stop believing it!

(John 15:13), “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

The importance of knowing what the Bible really says about God cannot be over stated.  There is a temptation for all of us, especially in the younger generations to impose our own thoughts about God onto Him.  We’ll say things like “God isn’t really like that” or “I can’t wrap my mind around a God who does…” or “that’s not my God”. A firm foundation is one where we know and worship and have a relationship with the God of the Bible.  The true God.  Not the one that we make up in our own minds.  A god whom we create (define) in our own minds, is nothing short of idolatry and worship of a false god.

It’s also important that you understand that God isn’t more of one thing than another.  He’s not more just than he is merciful. He’s not more loving that he is wrathful.  He’s not more this and less of another thing.  He exists in the tension of being all of those things perfectly and simultaneously.  When he exercises mercy, it doesn’t mean that He is any less just.

We cannot stress enough how POWERFUL it will be in transforming your life to the greatest joy and confidence you will ever possess when unlocking your faith and allowing it to be totally emerged into the reality and truth of these attributes of God and the awe of Him, and how they apply to you personally. You’re the one that is either going to let this be “just another simple study about God”, or the greatest transformation your life will experience as a believer, as you put your faith in all that He is to you and for you.  May God guide you into the wonder, surprise, admiration and amazement of Him by His attributes!

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29kjv)

More attributes of God

Infinitude of God – God is Infinite (limitless & immeasurable). God is not limited by anything outside of His character. This applies to all of God’s attributes. Example: The goodness of God means God is infinitely good.  God is also infinitely just, infinitely immutable (unchanging over time), etc… (Psalm 147:5) (Psalm 145:3) (1 Timothy 1:17)

God is Personal – God is a self-conscious Being who capable of thought, will, emotions, and interaction with His creation. (Psalm 34:4-8) (Matthew 6:31-34) (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Life Giver – All of life was and is created by God and is dependent on Him. (Gen. 2:7) (John 1:4)

Immateriality of God – The state or quality of being immaterial. God’s existence is non-physical, and is distinct from His creation. God is Spirit (John 4:24) (2 Corinthians 3:17) (1 Timothy 1:17)

Self-Existence of God – God has always existed. God does not have a beginning. (Psalm 90:2) (Psalm 93:2)

Self-Sufficiency of God – God has no needs, cannot improve and does not change. We, on the other hand, as created beings rely completely on God for our every breath. (Hebrews 13:8) (Isaiah 66:1-2) (John 15:5)

Sovereignty of God – God created everything and therefore all things are under His sovereign control. (Daniel 4:17,35) (Rev. 19:11-16)

Eternality of God – The Eternality of God refers to his timeless nature. God had no beginning, and will have no end. (Psa 90:2) (Isa 40:28)

Immutability of God – The Immutability of God means He cannot change in His nature, character or dependability. (Hebrews 6:17-18) (Hebrews 13:8) (James 1:17)

Perfection of God – God is completely flawless, lacks nothing and has no moral imperfection.

(Deuteronomy 32:4) (Matthew 5:48) (1 John 1:5)

Wisdom of God – (omniscience) By His omniscience, God perfectly knows all possibilities and what would happen if they came to pass.  By His omniscience, His wisdom is perfect so that He knows which course of action is the best. (Matthew 6:31-32) (Romans 11:33) (James 3:17)

Grace, Mercy and Love of God – God’s dealing with His people are based on His goodness, compassion, concern and generosity; instead of what we truly deserve. (Ephesians 2:8-9) (Psalm 145:8-9) (1 John 3:16)

Meekness of God – Although there is none so high, holy, almighty and majestic, there is none so lowly and meek.  (Matthew 11:28-30) (Philippians 2:5-8) (John 13:3-5)

Justice of God – All of God’s judgments are infinitely and perfectly just. (Rev. 19:11) (Isa. 11:4)

Freedom of God – The freedom of God, also called divine freedom, designates that God is free and not constrained by anyone other than Himself. He does what He pleases and therefore He is always free… He is not bound to the dictates of anyone else. He does make promises, to be sure, which obligate Him to do certain things, but He makes those promises voluntarily. (Job 9:12) (Daniel 4:35)

Jealousy of God – Throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation God always draws His people’s attention to Himself. When His people’s attention wanders from Him, He’s quick to draw them back.  This attribute of God is known as His “jealousy”.  We usually think of jealousy as an ugly emotion, as when we want the success or money that someone else has. But there is also an absolutely right kind of jealously, and that is the reluctance or unwillingness of someone to allow others what is rightly his and his alone. The classic example is of a husband and wife joined by God – each of them is, in the right sense, jealous for the other.  Neither will share the other with anyone else: the very idea is repulsive to them. In the same way, God will not accept the idea that He has to share our passion and affection with anyone or anything else. The Church is Christ’s bride. (Exodus 20:1-5; 34:12-14) (Deuteronomy 4:23-24) (Zechariah 8:2)

Solitariness of God – There was a time when creation, even heaven, didn’t exist, but God’s glory did because He is from everlasting. There was a time when angels, nor humans were praising Him and He was still altogether wonderful. He is self-contained, self-sufficient, and self-satisfied. He was under no compulsion to create out of necessity or deficiency. He created all things simply to display His glory. God could’ve very well chosen not to create and He still would be The Perfect One.  (Job 38:1-7) (Psalm 90:2)

Reliability of God – The love, holiness and truthfulness of God is the foundation of His reliability to us.  God cannot go against His nature.  He will always be true to His attributes and thus, He is infinitely reliable and trustworthy. (Psalm 9:10) (Psalm 91:1-4) (Proverbs 3:5)

Decrees of God will come to pass and are unstoppable – The decree of God is His purpose or determination with respect to future things. (Matthew 24:35) (Matthew 5:18)

Foreknowledge of God – God’s awareness of something before it happens or exists. (Luke 12:27-30) (Daniel 2:27-28) (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

Patience of God – The Divine patience is the power of control which God exercises over Himself, causing Him to be patient with the wicked and forbearing so long in punishing them. In Nahum 1:3 we read, “The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,” (2 Peter 3:9) (Mat. 23:37) (Psalm 86:15)

The Majesty of God – Sovereign power, authority, or dignity. It is also a reference to greatness or splendor of quality or character.  (Isaiah 40:12-28) (Revelation 5:11-14)

Incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22)

Compassionate (2 Corinthians 1:3)

Merciful (Romans 9:15)

Gracious (Romans 5:17)

Concerning His Work

We cannot understand God apart from His works, because what God does flows from who He is. Here is an abbreviated list of God’s works, past, present, and future:

  • God created the world (Genesis 1:1) (Isaiah 42:5)
  • He actively sustains the world (Colossians 1:17) (Hebrews 1:1-3)
  • He has given man dominion over the earth but is actively involved in mankind’s affairs (Genesis 1:28) (Proverbs 3:5-6) (Proverbs 21:1)
  • He is executing His eternal plan (Ephesians 1:11)

Which involves the redemption of man from the curse of sin and death (Galatians 3:13-14)

And finally establishing a new eternal kingdom of righteousness, love, joy and peace (Revelation 21-22)

  • He continually reveals Himself to the world by creation (Psalm 19:1-3), His Spirit (John 16:7-11), and His Word (Rom. 16:25-26)
  • He draws people to Himself (John 6:44)
  • He disciplines, guides and directs His children (Hebrews 12:5-13)
  • He rewards those who love and trust Him (Matthew 5:1-12)
  • And He will judge the world (Revelation 20:11-15)

Concerning a Relationship with Him

In the Person of the Son, God became incarnate (John 1:14). The Son of God became the Son of Man and is therefore the “bridge” between God and man (John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5). It is only through the Son that we can have forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), reconciliation with God (John 15:15; Romans 5:10), and eternal salvation (2 Timothy 2:10). In Jesus Christ “all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). So, to really know who God is, all we have to do is learn about Jesus.

His deep desire to have a relationship with us is clearly expressed through the sacrifice He went through in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 15:13) (1 John 3:16) (John 3:16).

Also, as you read the Song of Solomon, you will see a “picture” of the intensity of the exchange of love that Christ desires between Him and His bride, the Church.
