The Second Coming of Christ

“How It Is Going to Happen”

The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is going to be the second most explosive eye witnessed event people have ever seen. It is second, only in comparison to His first!  Regarding His second coming, God’s Word goes into a lot of detail. Let’s briefly look at a dozen points.

The Lord Summons His Army

The Lord will first summon His army in heaven to prepare for battle.

(Joel 2:1-2, 10-11), Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the Lord is coming, For it is at hand: A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come, great and strong, The like of whom has never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them, Even for many successive generations…The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble; The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness. The Lord gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; Who can endure it?

The Horsemen And Army Stand Battle-Ready

The Lord comes before His powerful army. His army stands in ranks, battle-ready, with their swords at their sides. He positions himself at the front. Just imagine what that will look like!

  • The Lord is sitting high on His white stallion.
  • So silent, you could hear a pin drop.
  • As He looks down at earth He reflects on this long-awaited moment. He and all us saints have patiently hungered for justice. Generations of innocent people fell victim to the evil acts delivered by unrepentant humans and demons. Justice must be served.
  • He then raises His hand, and holds it there, while all of heavens’ hosts gasp for breath.
  • Just as He is dropping His arm, immediately the heavens split open as the Lord sounds the charge, followed by shouts of thunder from His entire army consisting of His holy angels and countless repentant people who were all justified through complete faith in His sacrifice, according to His Word, the Holy Bible.

The account of this moment described in the Book of Revelation is jaw dropping.

(Revelation 19:11-16), Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

The Army Attacks

The heaven’s tremble and quake as the Lord and His army charge towards earth. The Lord Jesus lets out a roar like only the Lion of Judah could! He’s no longer holding back this righteous anger for all the sin done against God and the innocent victims. The pain of this moment gives birth to a NEW BEGINNING that will ultimately be unimaginably wonderful. Much like a birthing mother’s pain, the pain experienced by Him will also prove worth it in the end.

(Isaiah 42:13-14), The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies. “I have held My peace a long time, I have been still and restrained Myself. Now I will cry like a woman in labor

Look how the voice of the Lord is described in Psalm 29:3-9:

• The voice of the Lord is over the waters

• The voice of the Lord is full of majesty

• His voice divides the flames of fire

• And strips the forests bare

• The God of glory thunders

• The voice of the Lord is powerful

• The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars

• He makes them also skip like a calf

• The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness

• His voice makes the deer give birth

• And in His temple, everyone says, “Glory!

The Rebels Fear the Reality

The people of the earth who rebelled against God are so terrified at what they see that they beg the rocks and mountains to fall on them to hide them from this terrifying sight.

(Revelation 6:12-17), I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

The Lord’s Army is Huge

The army of the Lord is so massive, that it will look like the sky being filled with clouds north to south, and east to west.

(Revelation 1:7), Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

(Joel 2:4-5), Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like swift steeds, so they run. With a noise like chariots Over mountaintops they leap, Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble, Like a strong people set in battle array.

Satan’s Army is Ready

The antichrist, in his madness, assembles a tremendous army to go against the Lord’s army.

(Revelation 19:17-19), Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.” And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

Many Fight at Armageddon

They gather in the valley of Armageddon and then are brought to the valley of Jehoshaphat.

(Revelation 16:16), And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

(Joel 3:11-16), Assemble and come, all you nations, And gather together all around. Cause Your mighty ones to go down there, O Lord. “Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down; For the winepress is full, The vats overflow—For their wickedness is great. “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and moon will grow dark, And the stars will diminish their brightness. The Lord also will roar from Zion, And utter His voice from Jerusalem; The heavens and earth will shake; But the Lord will be a shelter for His people, And the strength of the children of Israel.

The Lord Stands at Mt. Of Olives

As the Lord descends to earth, His feet touch the Mt. Of Olives and it splits in two.

(Zechariah 14:1-4), Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.

Instantly Incinerated

Jesus’ enemies will feel the effect of something fast and deadly like an atomic bomb!

(Zechariah 14:12), And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.

Nothing will survive the wrath of God and His army as they pass over the land and God’s enemies.

(Joel 2:3), A fire devours before them, And behind them a flame burns; The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, And behind them a desolate wilderness; Surely nothing shall escape them.

The Antichrist’s Fatalities Are Huge

The Lord and His army then charge into the valley of Jehoshaphat and there the bloodiest battle in history takes place. The Antichrist and his army are slaughtered. The amount of blood from the Antichrist and his army fills the entire valley up to the horse’s bridle.

(Revelation 14:18-20), And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs.

As man crushes grapes underneath his feet in the winepress, so shall the Lord Jesus Christ crush His enemies (Isaiah 63:1-4) till they burst like grapes (Revelation 19:15)!!

The Antichrist is Destroyed

The Antichrist is then cast into the lake of fire.

(Revelation 19:19-21), And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.

The Devil Bound for 1,000 Years

The Devil is bound for 1,000 years in the bottomless pit, and the Lord’s reign on earth begins.

(Revelation 20:1-4), Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

The Lord Jesus now begins to set up His kingdom for 1,000 years, and then for eternity after that. We will dig into the first 1,000 years of His earthly reign in our very next lesson.

We know how the story ends. He has already won.

Be sure to be on the winning side!
