Foundations of Faith – The Resurrection of Jesus Christ
Did Jesus Rise from The Dead,
How Can I Know for Sure?

The “Wow” of the Resurrection of Jesus
Grasping the reality of the event of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is so crucial to our faith and all that we believe, that the apostle Paul wrote down the following words;
(1 Corinthians 15:14-19), “And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up–if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.”
In other words, if Christ did not really rise from the dead, we are wasting our time doing the things we do as Christians and we have absolutely no hope of forgiveness of sins and confidence that we will be in Heaven when this life is over.
Because the reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is so important to your faith being built on a SOLID foundation, our Lord has designed the events that took place 2000 years ago to be your EVIDENCE TODAY so you can have absolute CONFIDENCE that Jesus Christ indeed rose from the dead! So, let’s buckle up and begin our journey.
When you think of it, it truly is amazing that millions all across this globe celebrate the reality of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ during the time of the holiday called Easter. Even our calendars today bear evidence of the reality of it as they all are dated from the time of this actual event. Every time a person writes a check and dates it, they are testifying something truly astonishing happened approximately 2000 years ago.
But do we have more proof than that?
The answer is “Yes!”
Proof #1 – The Law of Probability
When we use the word “prophecy”, we are referring to a prediction of the future that God revealed and had it spoken or written by a person He has chosen. Sadly, many Christians do not talk about prophecy or are even interested in it, and yet, it is VERY IMPORTANT because much of the Bible is prophecy!
In the Old Testament there are 300 specific & over 450 total prophecies that the true Savior from Heaven must complete about Himself when He comes to us. This means that it is impossible for anyone to do it but Him.

The reason why is because “The Law of Probability” claims that in order for a person to fulfill and complete eight specific prophecies, the chances of a person being able to do this is 1 out of 10^17. that’s 1 out of ONE HUNDRED QUADRILLION. To put this huge number into perspective, imagine if you took a person and covered their eyes. Then cover the big state of Texas knee high with silver dollar coins. Then paint just one with a red cross. Then tell that person they must walk all over the state of Texas blindfolded but they have only one chance, to randomly reach down and pick up that one and only one with the red cross. The odds of randomly picking that marked coin is the same odds as one human ever randomly fulfilling these eight specific prophecies. The Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled not only eight, but over 300 specific & over 450 total predictions!
(see the “Law of Probability Examples” later in this section for more details)
STOP HERE for just a moment. Pause within your heart and try to grasp how our Heavenly Father has designed this POWERFUL FOUNDATION for your faith to rest upon. For 2,000 years, from the time of Abraham up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has continually laid a foundation for our faith to rest upon as seen here in the words of our Lord Jesus;
(Luke 24:25-27), “Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
To get a better understanding of how powerful this foundation is and impossible without God Himself creating it, with a pen and piece of paper try to write only eight unusual things that you think are going to come true in the next few weeks concerning yourself. Remember, it cannot be something ordinary like putting on your socks in the morning or brushing your teeth next Tuesday. The prophecies Jesus fulfilled were all very unusual. Okay, now try writing them.
Most people would have just put the pen down and said this is crazy. There is no way I can know 100% for sure not even one thing unusual that will happen to me in the future.
And yet the Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled not only one, but over 450 predictions!
Now that’s a big “Wow”!!!!!!!!
Proof #2 – Where’s the Body?!
Shortly after Jesus was crucified by His enemies, the disciples of Jesus went to Jerusalem right where they buried Jesus and began to tell the people that Jesus rose from the dead and is now alive.
If Jesus did not rise from the dead, all His enemies had to do was take the dead body of Jesus out of the tomb and show the people that he is still dead. But they could not. Why? Because Jesus rose from the dead and was alive and walked out of the tomb!
Because of the great hatred the Jewish priests and also the Roman soldiers had concerning Jesus, they would not have hesitated one minute if they could have. But neither the priests nor the Roman soldiers were able to do it because,
JESUS CHRIST REALLY DID RISE FROM THE DEAD!!!

(Luke 24:5-6), “…Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen…”
Proof #3 – Why would the disciples risk their lives preaching the gospel message?
It is well recorded in our history books that the apostles of Jesus were put to death for their faith in Jesus. If Jesus was a fake, why would the apostles lay down their lives for a lie?!!
And if they did steal the body – (like some claim) they would have to be completely crazy and very foolish not to reveal where the body was in exchange for their lives being saved.
To help you understand this amazing proof, let’s pretend you are the apostle Peter back then and I am John and Jesus was crucified but never rose from the dead. But I come up to you and say, “Peter, even though Jesus is dead let’s go out and tell the people that he rose from the dead.” What would you say to me? You would think that I am crazy and you would say, “No way! What do we have to gain by telling the people a lie and put our lives in danger and the lives of our wife and children?”
But yet the apostles did go out into the streets of the cities and cried out that Jesus is alive and indeed rose from the dead. They did this even though they all knew that if they go out and preach the resurrection of Jesus Christ, they also would be killed along with possibly their family members by the same angry people that killed Jesus.

To deny the reality of the resurrection of Jesus is a terrible and hard-hearted insult to the unimaginable suffering men, woman and children went through during the days of the gospels for their faith, so that you and I could also have the chance to hear the “good news” today and be saved from our sins.
Do you see the “Wow” of the resurrection of Jesus and the POWER of this foundation?
Proof #4 – The disciples went from doubting to dying for Jesus
It is also well recorded that when Jesus was crucified the only ones that were faithful and stayed with Jesus while He was on the cross were only three women and one apostle, John. All the rest of the apostles were afraid and ran away.

Why were they such cowards one moment when they fled as the soldiers took Jesus away to be crucified, and then just a few days later they were willing to give their lives to tell the whole world about Jesus?
Such FEAR and WEAKNESS in one moment, and then the next, such great BOLDNESS, CONVICTION and STRENGTH!
WHAT CHANGED THEM?
THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD!!!
Thomas greatly doubted and lost all his faith in Jesus and Peter greatly denied Jesus even to the point of cursing and swearing.
WHAT CHANGED THEM?
THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD!!!
Proof #5 – Why Begin at Jerusalem?

If Jesus did not really rise from the dead, then why did the disciples begin right at the place where Christ was crucified? It was at Jerusalem where they began telling the people that Jesus rose from the dead. Why not go to China or anyplace far away where it would have been much harder to argue against their message?
The reason was because the followers of Jesus had nothing to hide. They were speaking the truth and were more than happy to have the people of Jerusalem see for themselves that the disciples were not lying. They were more than happy to bring the people to the empty tomb in Jerusalem and show them that Jesus is not there because He is risen from the dead.
Proof #6 – From Saul to Paul
(Acts 9:1-5), “Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed, he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me…”

(2 Timothy 4:6-8), “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
Saul, the apostle Paul, wrote these words shortly before he died.
If Jesus did not rise from the dead, how does one explain Saul (Paul) who was for one moment killing the people who loved Jesus and then the next moment, Paul himself laying down his life for the faith he has in Jesus Christ?!
How could the chief enemy of Christianity become its chief apostle?!
There is only one true explanation;
Saul of Tarsus met the RISEN Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus!!!!
Saul was on his way to great honors for his leadership role in going after Christians with arrest, imprisonment and even death. Then suddenly he himself becomes a Christian!
He was repeatedly despised, persecuted, arrested, beaten, stoned and imprisoned.
FOR WHAT? Something he imagined? NO! IT’S SOMETHING THAT HE SAW!
A RISEN LORD AND SAVIOR!!
Do you see the “WOW” of the resurrection of Jesus? If so, write “WOW” here ___________!
So CONFIDENT was the apostle Paul in the resurrection from the dead for not only Jesus, but also for all those who will choose to make Jesus their “cornerstone” of salvation, he excitedly wrote down these words;
(1 Corinthians 15:55-57), “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Law of Probability Examples
2ft of Silver Dollars In Texas – Just 8 of the hundreds would be enough proof
After examining only eight specific prophecies (even though he could have used 456) Professor Emeritus of Science at Westmont College, Peter Stoner, has calculated the probability of one man fulfilling the major prophecies made concerning the Messiah. The mathematical estimates were worked out by twelve different classes of 600 college students. The students carefully weighed all the factors, discussed each prophecy at length, and examined the various circumstances which might indicate that men had conspired together to fulfill a particular prophecy. They made their estimates conservative enough so that there was finally unanimous agreement among even the most skeptical students. Not only that, but when Professor Stoner took their estimates and made them even more conservative, he also encouraged other skeptics and scientist to make their own estimates to prove that his conclusions were more than fair.
Finally, he submitted his figures for review to a Committee of the American Scientific Affiliation. Upon examination, they verified that his calculations were dependable and accurate in regard to the scientific material presented.
For example, concerning Micah 5:2, where it states that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, Stoner and his students determined the average population of Bethlehem from the time of Micah to the present; then they divided it by the average population of the earth during the same period. They concluded that the chance of one man being born in Bethlehem was one in 2.8 x 10 to the 5th power – or rounded, one in 300,000.
After examining eight different prophecies, they conservatively estimated that the chance of one man fulfilling all eight prophecies was one in 10 to the 17th power. To illustrate how large the number 10 to the 17th power is (a figure with 17 zeros) the professor gave this illustration… Imagine covering the entire state of Texas with silver dollars to a level of two feet deep. The total number of silver dollars needed to cover the whole state would be 10 to the 17th power. Now, choose just one of those silver dollars, mark it with a cross and drop it from an airplane. Thoroughly stir all the silver dollars all over the state, 2 feet deep.
When this has been done, blindfold one man. Tell him he can travel wherever he wishes in the state of Texas. Tell him that somewhere along the way, he must stop and reach down into the two feet of silver dollars and randomly pick only one coin, and it has to randomly turn out to be the specific silver dollar coin we secretively marked with the cross.
What do you think his chances are? The chance of finding that one silver dollar in the state of Texas is the same odds the prophets had of eight prophecies “randomly” being fulfilled by in any of the humans who have ever walked the earth.

In financial terms, is there anyone who would not invest in a financial venture if the chance of failure were only one in 10 to the 17th power? This kind of sure investment we are offered by God for belief in Christ His Messiah. Professor Stoner concludes: “The fulfillment of these eight prophecies alone proves that God inspired the writing of those prophecies to a definiteness which lacks only one chance in 10 to the 17th power of being absolute“.
Another way of saying this is that, any person who minimizes or ignores the significance of the Biblical identifying signs concerning the Messiah would be foolish. Of course, though, there are many more than eight prophecies.
Electron Example – Just 48 of the hundreds would be unimaginable
In another calculation Peter Stoner used 48 prophecies (even though he could have used 456) and arrived at the extremely conservative estimate that the probability of 48 prophecies being fulfilled in one person is 10 to 157th power. How large is the number 10 to the 157th power? 10 to the 157th power contains 157 zeros! Let us try to illustrate this number using electrons… Electrons are very small objects. They are smaller than atoms. It would take 2.5 times 10 to the 15th power of them, laid side by side, to make one inch. Even if we counted four electrons every second and counted day and night, it would still take us 19 million years just to count a line of electrons one-inch long.
How many electrons would there be if we were dealing with 10 to the 157th power of electrons?
Imagine building a solid ball of electrons that would extend in all directions from the earth of 6 billion light years. The distance in miles of just one light year is 6.4 trillion miles. That would be a big ball! But not big enough to measure 10 to the 157th power of electrons! In order to do that, you must take that big ball of electrons reaching the length of 6 billion light years long in all directions and multiply it by 6 x 10 to the 28th power! How big is that? It’s the length of the space required to store trillions and trillions and trillions of the same gigantic balls and more. In fact, the space required to store all of these balls combined together would just start to “scratch the surface” of the number of electrons we would need to really accurately speak about 10 to the 157th power!
Assuming you have some idea of the number of electrons we are talking about; imagine marking just one of those electrons in that huge number. Stirring them all up. Then appointing one person to travel in a rocket for as long as he wants, anywhere he wants to go. Now tell him to stop the rocket, segment a part of space, take a high-powered microscope, and find that one marked electron. What do you think his chances of being successful would be? It would be one in 10 to the 157th power. Remember; this number represents the chances of only 48 prophecies coming true in one person.
All this illustrates why it is absolutely impossible for anyone to have fulfilled the Messianic prophecies by chance. In fact, a leading authority on the probability theory, Emile Borel, states in his book Probabilities and Life, that once we go past one chance in 10 to the 50th power, the probabilities are so small it’s impossible to think they will ever occur.
Here is one last illustration of the immensity of the number 10 to the 157th power and why the science of probability shows we are dealing with the miraculous… Imagine one ant traveling at the speed of only one inch every 15 billion years. If he could only carry one atom at a time, how many atoms could he move in 10 to the 157th power of years? He would, even at that incredibly slow speed, be able to move all the atoms in 600,000 trillion trillion trillion trillion universes the size for our universe, a distance of 30 billion light years! Again, by the laws of probability, all of this means that it is effectively impossible for 48 prophecies to be fulfilled by chance.
This is the kind of evidence that proves there must be a God who supernaturally gave us this information. Let’s keep in mind that we’ve only illustrated 48 out of over 456 Messianic prophecies out of over 8000 total verses in Bible prophecy, of which thousands of verses have been fulfilled already. God challenges us; He really, really challenges us!
Summary of Facts
The Bible is 1/3 prophecy and is the only book of prophecy with a 100% accuracy rate.
There are approximately 2500 prophecies in the Bible- 2000 have been fulfilled with frightening detail (the remainder concerns future events to be fulfilled in the last days)
Some estimated the probability for these numerous prophecies being fulfilled by accident is less than 1 in 10 to the power of 2000- this is 1 with 2000 zeros after it!
The enemy tries to counterfeit God’s miracles to deceive the world. But since he is only a limited created being, he does not succeed. Which explains why people like Nostradamus, mediums, psychics and other ‘fortunetellers’ fail often.
This page is specifically focusing on hundreds of prophecies concerning the Identity of the Messiah, the Savior of Israel and the peoples of the world.
It has been calculated that anyone just fulfilling 8 specific Messianic prophecies by chance is next to impossible, 1 in 10 to the 17th power (1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000).
It is roughly estimated that fulfilling 48 of the prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 157th power, (or 1 in 10,00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000…consider the number of zeros for all 300+ prophecies!)
Now you should start see that against these astronomical odds, only Jesus the Christ could have fulfilled these prophecies (30 on the day of His crucifixion alone!), thus proving not only that He is the Messiah King but also that there is a God who foresaw it and inspired it to be written down hundreds and even thousands of years prior.
The Prophecies
Below is a significant portion of the Messianic Prophecies in summary form. However, to further pique your interest I shall begin by detailing one of my favorites which not only removes all doubt that Jesus is Mashiach nagid- the Messiah: but also, that the Bible is supernaturally inspired:
The book of Daniel was written during the Babylonian captivity in the sixth century before Christ. Skeptics who deny authentic authorship by Daniel still have to admit that the book appears in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) by the second century before Christ. Even this later date makes this a valid and powerful prophecy.
Daniel 9:24-26 The following terms are crucial to understanding the prophecy: “Anointed one” is the Messiah that the Jews were waiting for (Messiah is Hebrew for Anointed One), “Cut off” always refers to killed in the O.T., and “Weeks”, or “Sevens” (depending upon translation) is the Hebrew word Heptad. Heptad is used to mean either a period of seven days or a period of seven years (Comparable to our use of “Decade” for ten years). This passage is stating that 69 times seven years after the decree to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem the Messiah would be killed for his people.
The Hebrew calendar consisted (and still consists) of 12 months of 30 days each, resulting in a 360-day year. The conversion from that calendar to ours is as follows:
1. 69 X 7 = 483 Hebrew years
2. 483 X 360 = 173,880 Days
3. 173,880 / 365 (Days in our calendar year) = 476 Years in our calendar after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem the Messiah will be cut off.
In Nehemiah 2:1 we read that in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes the decree was given to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (vs 2-9). King Artaxerxes is a historical figure whose reign secular historians say began in 464 B.C. 20 years from that date would be 444 B.C. when the decree is issued. Traveling forward in time 476 years brings us to 33 A.D. (Remember that there is no year 0. The year after 1 B.C. is 1 A.D.).
The general agreement among historians, whatever their opinion of Jesus, is that 33 A.D. is the year that he was crucified. That makes this an amazingly accurate, incredibly specific fulfilled prophecy with WRITTEN BY GOD stamped all over it.
