The Treasures of Meekness

Man was created in the image of God. Part of the image included meekness. One of the greatest examples of the meekness of God was shown when the Lord chose to ride on a weak, fragile, infant donkey on His way to Jerusalem.

(Matthew 21:1-5), “Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The greatest example of God’s meekness was when the Lord, as He was being crucified, cried out, “Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34).

  • The meekness of God draws Him to us!
  • The meekness of God draws us to Him!
  • Because of His meekness, we can come before His majestic presence!
  • Because of His meekness, we can go to Him for forgiveness any time, and because of His meekness, He will forgive!

In this study, we would like to discover “The Treasures of Meekness.” The definition of meek is: “mild of temper, soft, gentle, humble, not easily provoked.”

The Meek Shall Eat and Be Satisfied

(Psalm 22:26), “The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.”

You can look at this two ways: Either physical or spiritual. The verses before and after seem to point to a spiritual application. Either way, satisfaction comes from a meek spirit that has found the Lord.

  • Pride produces ungodly appetites: Pride says, “I want more; give me more.”

Meekness says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” – “Jesus is all the world to me.”

  • Pride says, “I deserve more.”

Meekness simply praises and thanks God for what it has, no matter how little or how much.

Paul is an excellent example of meekness. He wrote these words while being held in a cold and cruel Roman prison;

(Philippians 4:10-12), “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”

“The meek shall eat and be satisfied.”

The Meek Will be Guided in Judgment and Will Be Taught God’s Ways

(Psalm 25:9), “The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.”

How often has pride caused us to misjudge?

  • Meekness will help insure us to judge properly.
  • Meekness does not jump to conclusions.
  • Meekness bathes itself in prayer and concern for others.
  • Meekness seeks to edify and refuses to destroy and tear down.
  • Meekness opens the doors of understanding.
  • Meekness opens the knowledge of God’s ways.

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth

(Psalm 37:8-11), “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret–it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

The Lord repeats this same principle in His sermon on the Mount;

(Matthew 5:5), “Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.”

We often look at the meek as those who love the Lord and sacrifice much.  Some have very little here on earth, but when we pause and consider their future, our heart rejoices in their abundance, for the new earth shall be theirs!

The Meek Shall be Held Up

(Psalm 147:6), “The Lord lifts up the meek; He casts the wicked down to the ground.”

Life is full of strong winds and angry waves. The proud have no support from the Lord.  Their lives will end in tragedy and despair. There will be no power in heaven or earth to come to their aid as they sink into outer darkness.

But for the meek, great peace and security are theirs for they are held up by the Lord! Their future is full of brightness and blessings which have no end because they built their house on the solid “Rock.” No ill wind or tempest shall bring them down because the Lord is their help.

The Meek Will be Beautified with Salvation

(Psalm 149:1-4), “Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.  Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.  Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.  For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.”

Every reason to reject Christ can all be traced back to pride:

  • “I don’t believe there is a God.” = PRIDE
  • “I have my religion.” = PRIDE
  • “I am a good person.” = PRIDE

Meekness opens the way to eternal life. Look at how Jesus explains it;

(Matthew 18:2-4), “Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Pride prevents us from seeing our actual sinful condition and our desperate need for Christ and His salvation. It causes us to refuse to come to the Lord and desire change.

Meekness does indeed pay off!!!
